Transportation in Cracow

Cracow's public transport backbone is the dense network of trams and buses run by MPK. Trams are the faster, more reliable choice for east-west hops across the Old Town and to Kazimierz. Buses fill the gaps and reach outer districts. A single rechargeable Kraków City Card (bought at any MPK machine or "kiosk Ruchu") covers both systems and spares you from hunting for coins. Services run from roughly 05:00 to 23:00, with a handful of night buses if you stay out late. For a first visit, ignore the private "tourist trains" that circle the Old Town, they crawl and cost several times more than a tram ticket. Instead, use Jakdojade, the local journey-planner app. It shows real-time departures and which door to board for quickest exit. Walking is often fastest in the compact centre. But when the Vistula bridges look far, hop on tram 3, 10 or 24, they all cross to Podgórze for a fraction of a taxi fare. From John Paul II International Airport, the train is the insider pick: it leaves every 30 minutes to Kraków Główny station in the city, and the ride is both quicker and cheaper than the official airport shuttle. If you-laden or arriving after the last train, the licensed taxi rank outside arrivals is the safe bet, ignore the unmarked cars inside the terminal.
